One of your problems will most certainly be the fact that you've plugged 
your linux box into an uplink port. The uplink port is crossed over (or is 
switchable) to allow hubs to be interconnected. From a physical network 
point of view your linux box is no different than your win95 boxes and 
should be plugged in to one of the standard hub ports,
