I'm not sure whether the assumption that the incoming and outgoing
interfaces will have different IP addresses is valid. I'm not totally sure
of the details, but here in New Zealand we have a service called StarNet,
Satellite download, modem upload. This works on linux, indeed we have
linux drivers for it, and I believe you only need to configure a single IP
in order for it to operate. Whether this is how your cable modem system
operates or not I don't know.
