Unless there's a weird dynamic going on with win98 specifically, there
shouldn't be any problem. Have you fulfilled all of Windows' ritualistic
requirements? Perhaps you should try something simpler like ftp or telnet to
one of those foreign windows boxes. A telnet server might be tough to find,
but there are tons of ftp servers for windows.
Usually to get Windows drive/print shares to work with more than one subnet
you will either have to share some WINS configuration or you will need to add
machine entries into your LMHOSTS file. I'm sure there are probably some new
fangled routers and stuff that will do bridging of Lan Manager broadcasts or
somehow proxy that stuff for WANS, but if you are trying to browse other
computers from your ISP dial-up then you will need to spoon feed the windows
resolver by setting up WINS or using LMHOSTS entries.
Still if you want to have Network Neighborhood entries show up you will have
to either tap into the foreign networks WINS server and share it with your
local WINS server, or maybe your local WINS server can be configured to add
static entries for those machines. Or you can also just point your win98 to
the foreign WINS server, but that will probably make things slow and
unreliable.
I mean it's pretty strange, but Windows just doesn't like to connect to drive
shares unless the Lan Manager parts can resolve the name.. even if the normal
resolver can figure it out. Maybe that's what that 'NetBIOS resolution uses
DNS' check in winipcfg does, but I doubt it is even connected to anything.
