No kidding. Traffic comes in from the cable modem, to the masq box,
then out the masq box, to the internal net client. Then the client
replies, and that reply goes to the masq box, then the masq box sends it
out to the cable modem. The traffic on your network is doubled, and
because the packets are being sent near the same time, the chance of
collisions is much higher.
Also, with your cable modem plugged into the same hub as the rest of
your internal network, it is able to see (and possibly broadcast to the
entire cable net) all of your internal traffic. That's bad, from a
security standpoint, too.

Absolutely. You can use a cross-over cable for the second NIC to
connect to the cable-modem, so that you don't need two hubs.
