I'm not sure why your proxy would be unable to look up a hostname.

This is because your browser is sending a non-proxied URL. The hostname
portion is deleted from the URL passed to the host. Your transparent
proxy would need to do the requisite getsockname() call in order to find
out where the request was supposed to go, and redirect it there.
I believe there is a "tproxyd" that you are supposed to use with Squid
to get the right magic.
