Because that's what the module does. It keeps the control connection
alive while a long data transfer is in progress.

That's too bad. How is the masq box supposed to know that you are
talking FTP protocol on a non-standard port? What should the firewall
do in order to read the mind of the server administrator and somehow
"know" that it is FTP protocol?

There is no reason that PASV mode should be any faster or slower. It's
just a difference in who initiates the connection.
There is nothing about PASV mode that forces you to logout and back in
again between connections. I really don't understand what you're
saying.
