My masq machine has Red Hat 6.0 with ipchains-1.3.8-3. It is connected
to the internet via modem and PPP with a dynamic IP address. Up to 3
computers can be dialed into the masq machine via modem and PPP. The
masq machine assigns each caller a (local) IP address. (It's a tiny
ISP.) The masq computer has no ethernet interface.

Occasionally the dialup computers behind the firewall lose sight of the
internet world beyond the masq computer. The masq computer continues to
interact normally with the internet world and the dialup computers
behind the firewall continue to interact normally with the masq computer,
but they can no longer see THROUGH the firewall to the internet. I
_think_ it fails when more than one computer is dialed in with PPP.

Most of the time the firewall works great, but this happens every day or
so. When it does, the only way I've found to get things working
through the firewall again is to reboot.

arp -a returns null normally and with lobotomy.

cat /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward returns 0 normally and with lobotomy.

ipchains -M -L returns just 'IP masquerading entries' normally and
  with lobotomy.

Help! Any suggestions, diagnostic approaches, or workarounds will be
appreciated.
