The quint primarily operates as E3, but it is the backup ladder. Whenever
L1 goes oos, the ladder crew takes the quint, and the E3 crew takes a 1987
Seagrave spare engine that's kept at HQ. When AFD took delivery of the
quint, it was initially assigned as L1, and the paintjob reflects that. I
guess it just wasn't repainted as E3 when it was reassigned, but another
marking on the quint says "Combination 1", so the piece can be used as
either. I don't know why they don't just use Combination 1 as the lettering
for all markings on the quint, because it really is both an engine and a
ladder.
