Smoke reported

The search for the plane and its occupants began shortly after 10 a.m.
Sunday when air traffic controllers lost contact with the crew of the
four-seat plane and it disappeared from their radar screens during a
flight from Martha's Vineyard to Barnstable Municipal Airport.

The airplane's pilot — it's not clear who was at the controls — was in
contact with air traffic controllers shortly before it disappeared to
report smoke in the cabin.

Later, he reported the smoke had cleared. The pilot then said he would
continue the training flight. That was the last communication with air
traffic controllers.

At first the search focused on the Mid-Cape area but soon moved to
Brewster and the bay.

After four hours of searching by the Coast Guard, state police, local
police, fire and natural resources officials, the bodies of Hues and
Walker were located near Saint's Landing in Brewster.

The search was well coordinated, but after no sign of the men in the
early going, it became more obvious that it would end badly, Clen
said.

"It's so sad," he said.

On Monday, small knots of people stood on the beach looking out to
where the Dennis harbormaster boat motored just beyond the flats that
were exposed at low tide.

A bystander, who said she lived a mile away, reported having heard a
plane that sounded lower than normal between 10 and 11 Sunday morning.
