What is the purpose of the interops channels nowadays?

150 Mhz - approx 5 simplex channels - sometimes used as temporary repeaters

450 Mhz - 4 repeater pairs

800 mhz - 5 repeater pairs - plus many states have some HT channels

700 Mhz - approx 100 interops channels

Considering that many public safety field radios now have 500 channels
- and considering that more and more public safety radios are dual or
triple band - what is the best use of the interops channels these
days?

1. dispatch to dispatch comms?

2. field to dispatch comms?

3. field to field comms?

4. disaster comms?

5. backup comms?

6. crossband ops?

7. phone patch channels?

8. air to ground channels or air to air channels?

9. parade channels?

10. training channels?

11. data channels?

12. onscene comms?

13. federal to local comms?

My votes for best use would be - interband ops at disasters - backup
for trunked systems - backup channels for large events - maybe phone
patch channels to serve as backups for cellphones

Think about how weak most public safety comms systems are in the USA.
If you lose just one transmit site or one receive site - immediately
there is a huge hole in the comms system. (except that the loss of one
receive site in a big city might not create a huge HT hole - but it
very well might). And the loss of one FX1 or one transmit site will
kill many 911 PSAPs in the USA. Phone calls might go into the PSAP -
but nothing will ever come out via radio.

Look at the USFS, BLM, FBI, etc - if they have just 1 repeater pair
that provides coverage for mobiles in their locality - they should
consider themselves blessed.

Of course - the telephone side of the 911 PSAP is not much better than
the radio side. 911 telephone failures are a daily occurence in the
USA. Apparently there is close to zero redundancy in central offices
and switching gear. We all know that the cellular systems are useless
in disasters.
