I seem to remember covering this in the past - but lets rehash it ---------------------------- New York City has multiple Emergency Medical Service (EMS) systems The "Public" "911" EMS system is accessed by calling 911, pulling a fire box, flagging down a cop or fire truck, walking into a police or fire station, etc. Public / 911 ambulances are dispatched by FDNY dispatchers using 480 Mhz radio channels and MDTs. Fire engines (as "first responders") are dispatched by FDNY dispatchers using 480 Mhz fire radio channels and MDTs. Police units (as "first responders") are dispatched by NYPD dispatchers using 470 Mhz PD radio channels. This is all funded out of the city budget. (I am pretty sure that all patients that are transported by ambulance to a hospital are billed but I dont know how much money is actually collected - but IIRC that number is public). The ambulances in the 911 system are 60% operated by FDNY, staff and 30% operated by "voluntary" agencies (hospitals and private ambulances that sub contract from hospitals). [I forget if any 'volunteer' ambulances are part of the 911 system - I think that some are]. Typically 300 to 400 ambulances (with 2 crew members each) are operating as part of the City 911 EMS system at any one time (IIRC). IIRC there is a 70% BLS 30% ALS crewing arrangement. In addition to the 911 system - there are multiple private, volunteer, and non profit ambulances in NYC. Typically they all have their own dispatchers, their own emergency (10 digit) telephone numbers, and their own radio systems. Some are BLS only. I think the largest of these are - 2 private ambulance companies with 150 ambulances each - plus Hatzolah with 80 ambulances. In addition there are maybe 30 to 50 volunteer ambulances services with maybe 1 ambulance each. The "volunteer" ambulance services use unpaid staff, and they might not operate 24/7. I dont know what happens when you call their telephone number at 2 PM on a Tuesday. The Red Cross does NOT operate any emergency ambulances in NYC AFAIK. Neither does the Trump Foundation nor the Clinton Foundation. Nor any insurance company nor Social Security nor the welfare bureau. Nor does the United Nations. Nor does the federal government nor the US military. Nor does the state government nor the NY Yankees. The NYNJ Port Authority operates 2 ambulances at JFK Airport - they might be BLS only IIRC. The police dept might have 1 or 2 ambulances to take sick cops to doctors appointments. Corrections? -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "massfire" group.
