Gatlinburg Tennessee - 14 dead in a wildfire - 2,000 buildings destroyed - problem with emergency alerts to the public
Could there be a clearer example of the need to have unencrypted public safety radio channels? Note to self - I need to find tweets and posts during the fire blowup time in Gatlinburg. 6 PM ish. Was anyone posting alerts online about this fire? I dont remember any. IIRC there was no live feed at Reddit - and Radio Reference had nothing. I wonder if there were any local social media in Gatlinburg that broadcast anything? I wonder if there is a local radio station with an online feed that is archived? Or maybe a local newspaper with a Facebook page? Or local EMA or FD (doubt it - I have never seen of any such posts) keywords - openness - live scanner audio CBS News last night at 630PM ish EST showed Dolly Parton doing a concert to raise money for the fire victims. I thonk that $7 million was raised. It was mentioned that 14 died, 2,000 blds were destroyed, and two people (teens) were arrested for arson. No mention of any problems. It was a 15 second news clip if that. The major news storys they covered IIRC were - (maybe Russian meddling in US election plus Russia hacking into Chiefs of Staff non secure Email system) and storms in the USA -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "massfire" group.
