here is a question about counties what parts of the USA are not within a county?
I am not sure if there is a legal or administrative or bureaucratic or societal question - but anyhow 1. alaska has some areas that are outside of boroughs iirc - but they probably get mail delivery and are protected by the us military - and pay federal taxes - and register for selective service etc - but they must show up on someones land ownership records 2. military bases might not be considered to be in counties - they probably dont have to follow county rules - but they probably do show up under county land ownership records - someone holds the elections on the military bases - someone delivers there mail - they probably dont pay any county taxes or fees - do US civilian laws apply on military bases? 3. iirc yellwostone national park and yosemite national park and maybe death valley national park are considered to be exclusive jurisdictions - ie the NPS provides all police and fire and other local governmental services - do state and county laws apply there? - they must - whose land ownership record system do they appear on? - their own? 4. how about indian reservations - they sit on many counties but I suspect that some are exclusive jurisdictions - having their own laws and law enforcement systems - do they have deeds to lands or is it all communal / trust land - is there any such thing as a Indian Assesors Department? - iirc have seen private land listed on indian reservations like at Colville Wash - maybe some private parcels were listed at the ? Ferry ? County Assesor office 5. district of columbia - ??? - have own local laws iirc - not sure what local taxes they pay - I cant imagine that any Maryland or Virginia laws apply to them - unless tere are some Metro planning laws that apply to DC 6. puerto rico? guam? marshall islands? 7. probably all males in all areas have to register for selective service / the military draft 8. Virginia cities are independent of counties - even the smallest of them apparently - so I guess that means that they dont pay taxes to the county and dont follow county rules 9. Angle Inlet Minnesota might be part of a Canadian county - ??? 10. embassys are considered to be foreign territory iirc - but they must have to meet local fire safety laws at the least - maybe not 11. NASA sites - wallops island - white sands - cape canaveral - they must be exclusive lands - what county laws do they follow? DOE also - Hanford - Savannah River - Los Alamos - etc - Los Alamos has a joint FD with Los Alamos County iirc - I forget who pays for what 12. what county is the United Nations Building in? any? New York City County? do they pay property taxes? do they follow the NYC fire code? who owns the land? -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "massfire" group.
