50 local students win National Merit Scholarship awards May 31, 2001 Fifty Chicago area students were named National Merit Scholarship winners in an announcement Wednesday by the Evanston-based organizer of the annual competition. The awards, sponsored by more than 200 U.S. colleges and universities, will give winners $500 to $2,000 annually to help pay college expenses. The winners were chosen based on their scores on the Preliminary SAT, grades and recommendations of high school principals. Winners are named in a series of announcements each spring by the National Merit Scholarship Corp. The most recent area winners are: ILLINOIS Arlington Heights: David M.
