The union vote also directed NEA lobbyists to battle mandatory testing requirements on a federal level. Congress is considering legislation that would require mandatory state testing in reading and math in grades three through eight, and grade 10. "If you want to know how your child is doing, you don't wait seven months to get the results of a standardized test," said Judi Hirsch, the algebra teacher who introduced the measure. "You ask your kid's teacher." Union delegates also voted in support of a resolution encouraging local officials to use various ways of assessing student learning. *************************************************** -- Jerry P.Becker Department of Curriculum & Instruction Southern Illinois University Carbondale, IL 62901-4610 USA Phone: (618) 453-4241 [O] (618) 457-8903 [H] Fax: (618) 453-4244 E-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] ---------------------------------------------------- This is the CPS Mathematics Teacher Discussion List.
