I use "python setupegg.py develop", which I think does the same thing as build_ext --inplace. I have made a symbolic link for the mpl-data subdirectory. (Perhaps some setuptools wizard can tell us how to fix setupegg.py so that mpl-data gets installed in-place?) -- Jouni K.
