And yes, I forgot to mention, "use" works as well

  import matplotlib
  matplotlib.use('module://my_backend')

and the syntax for the -d flag was wrong in my last email  (it is
"module://" not "file://"), it should read::

  > python simple_ploy.py -d module://my_backend
