Thanks for the last sentence. I had set TTFPATH properly but
I don't know why matplotlib didn't see the ttf fonts in
$HOME/.fonts. I searched gmane and found your article which do apply
my case:
  If you are sure on both counts, it may help to remove your font cache
  (typically  ~/.ttffont.cache on linux like systems) and let matplotlib
  regenerate it's cache.  

No it works all ok!
