sorry for all this. I guess I don't fully understand the bbox thing....

Anyway it works great except for 2 things:
** now the x,y coordinates in the toolbar are VERY SLOWLY updated... In fact as the mouse moves, the coordinates do not show up and are only updated when it is stopped.
** my text does not appear fully (some part is blanked, and changing the bbox does not seem to do much)

It shouldn't matter which way you create the text instance.
