Hi,

John, if I run your script I found following behaviour of distinct
backends in terms of memory leaks:

QtAgg - ok
Agg - ok
GTKAgg - oh, memory leak
PDF - ok, as you mentionend

Hope it helps, seems it is not a problem of matplotlib?!
