something like:
# init figures
fig = figure()
ax = fig.add_subplot(111)
# plot the lines
ax.plot_date(...)
# x data (dates) formatter
ax.xaxis.set_major_formatter( DateFormatter('PUT YOUR FORMAT HERE') )
