I ran into the same problem today trying to prepare figures for my thesis,
and I figured out a way to do it...it's not pretty, but it works:

import matplotlib.pyplt as plt
tick_locs = range(start, stop, increment)
plt.xticks(tick_locs, [r"$\mathbf{%s}$" % x for x in tick_locs])
