I can not reproduce this bug with matplotlib 1.0dev on Windows. So this 
is apparently fixed in svn trunk, probably by 
<http://matplotlib.svn.sourceforge.net/viewvc/matplotlib/trunk/matplotlib/lib/matplotlib/pyplot.py?r1=8352&r2=8424&pathrev=8424>
