Nothing like running into a brick wall, eh?  Are you using the 1.1h 
Installer?  I had this same issue using the rev. g Installer on 
NetBSD.  Rev. H solved it.  You can also use the MAKEDEV all command 
once you've booted into single-user mode.  Mathew Theobald has a 
write up for this in his install notes:
