I finally had an hour or two to spend on this. Here's a portion of what I
got...

(II) FBDev(0): Hardware: ATY Mach64 (vidmem: 4092k)
(II) FBDev(0): Checking Modes against framebuffer device...
(II) FBDev(0): mode "1024x768" test failed
(II) FBDev(0): Checking Modes against monitor...
(--) FBDev(0): Virtual size is 1024x768 (pitch 1024)
(**) FBDev(0): Built-in mode "current": 29.8 MHz, 34.5 kHz, 65.8 Hz

Maybe the failure is due to the sync rates being set up incorrectly or
something. I went through /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 and changed all the Screen
settings (modes and virtuals) to 832x624 and that seemed to work. However,
the panel flakes out on me then. Doesn't redraw, and soon stops responding
altogether. Fortunately I can still right-click the desktop to get a menu
to logout. I wish I knew more about this stuff.
