NetBSD runs on more different types of hardware than any other OS
on the planet, including Linux. For those platforms where there is
no other BSD choice, the answer is simple. For those platforms where
both NetBSD and OpenBSD are available, they each have their
advantages and disadvantages, depending on what you want to do.
However, on x86 hardware, FreeBSD is frequently a better choice.
However, MacOS X is not based on NetBSD. The kernel is Mach, and
there is a BSD userland on top. Most of this userland code comes
from FreeBSD, but some probably comes from other versions of *BSD
(including NetBSD).
