        Is this partition already formatted?  If not, the MacOS X 
installation program will insist on formatting all partitions on that 
disk, potentially wiping out anything else you may have there.  I ran 
into this problem myself when trying to upgrade from 10.1.5 to 10.2 
and I had 8G of space on the hard drive that wasn't even formatted.

        1.  Install MacOS X 10.2.
