Can these *bsd flavours indeed use some cheap PC PCI cards? Any
experiences?

I would think most would work.

Interesting, so, in theory with OSX being another *BSD flavour running on macs, it should be possible also to use these PC PCI cards under OSX?

Many people assume that because OS X uses many parts of FreeBSD as part of it's "underneath" structure, that FreeBSD drivers will work. Not so.

OS X uses a mach kernel with a BSD personality, it does not use a BSD kernel.
Additionally, OS X uses a completely different driver model ( I/O Kit ) from either any *BSD flavor or Linux. Drivers for specific hardware have to be specifically written for OS X, so *BSD or Linux drivers will not work.

Or has OSX a way to force us using the
more expensive "OSX compatible" hardware?

Apple has provided a fairly good range of drivers for OS X ( some are not included with the Darwin distribution ), so many non-Apple cards do work on OS X.

One thing to watch out for when trying PCI cards in Power PC hardware ( no matter the OS ) is some cards have firmware that only works on one platform ( x86 ).
