If you're mostly concerned with the speed of X, you should get something
like an ATI Rage or Radeon PCI card. I have been buying Sapphire Radeon
7000 cards from Newegg for around $45 USD and flashing the Mac ROM onto
it (although the cards will only run at 143 MHz). But any Mac compatible
ATI card should do for both serving the console and running X pretty
decently.

Any useful links that you would recommend please?

Sure. Newegg has the video card: http://www.newegg.com/app/SearchProductResult.asp?Submit=Go&DEPA=0

It's $40 USD, but you have to find a PC to use to flash the ROM.

Grabbed a 64mb ATI Evil Wizard off ebay for $65 au so about $40 US.

Get these files:

http://www.appletalk.com.au/forums/index.php?showtopic=352 has a link to a flash kit for pc and instructions, the only thing needed was the drivers from ATI

After the flash the card was installed into the mac it was flashed again with the updated 7000 mac bios from ATI's site. We then installed the drivers.

The card worked fine under 2D, better than the Voodoo3 but I had no OpenGL. Reinstalling OpenGL I found the "ATI Video Accelerator extension - version 4.8.7 to be incompatible with OpenGL 1.2.1. I disabled 4.8.7 and the installer reinstalled version 4.6.5, from there everthing works well under the unsupported OS9.1. :) Please note it was the 64mg card rather than the 32mb that most folks try.

Thanks again John, very easy and well worth the money. The Voodoo is off to a old 7220, I might find a use for that pile of junk after all.
I'm looking forward to seeing YDL and MDK under a supported card on the mac, maybe even a taste of OS X. Cheers
