Thank you gentlemen, for your considered input. I am chiefly curious. On the linux sites, they say that linux will much out perform OS X, with its GUI, and Darwin too. The kernel is smaller and more modern, they say, and the Mach kernel is meant more for modular memory control. I do not understand about this, although the idea seems to be that Darwin must send info from the cpu out to ram and back and forth, and so it is slower in processing.

Be all that as it may, and I would not know about such things, I cannot but wonder. The G3 that I have is a blue, or B&W. I have to get another HD for it.

So the use that I would put things to is simply for my education(I hope).

I read this review on Ubuntu that caught my interest. LinuxFormat installed it on a PowerBook, however, it was not able to do much with a one button mouse. Hmm, well I have a desktop/tower.

Anyway, thanks to you fellows for your contributions, it is good to hear people's experience. NetBSD, eh? Thanks for the notes here on the various BSDs.
