If log overwrite is ON, you should be able to restore any complete and
incremental data backups, as long as the resulting state of the data
volumes matches the current information available on the log volume.

If you switch off log overwrite and use autolog or manual log backups
you can of corse delete any useless log backups. They are just files in
the file system.

There is no best compromise for log configuration, if HD space is the
criteria. You could use the available space for one log volume plus log
overwrite or you could configure a very small log volume and use the
rest of the available space for log backups or something in between.
