Hi,

It is very nice of you to enquire on how to cite Mayavi. We indeed need
citations to be able to justify time spent on the software. The reason
that we haven't made an official 'how to cite' information on the webpage
yet is that the paper is not out. However, I just had confirmation from
the publisher that it is coming out in the January edition of CISE
(Computing in Science and Engineering), and a preprint can be found on
arxiv: http://arxiv.org/pdf/1010.4891

The right citation would be something like:
@article{ramachandran2010mayavi,
  title={{Mayavi: a package for 3D visualization of scientific data}},
  author={Ramachandran, P. and Varoquaux, G.},
  journal={Computing in Science and Engineering},
  month={January},
  year={2011}
}

Best,

Gaƫl
