I have had a copy of the Jakarta Struts Cookbook for a while (ostensibly for a book review). This note is encouraged by my just about being finished reading the cookbook for the review.
I had a desire to develop a CGI (and potentially mod-perl) application quite a while ago. (Project still not finished, argh! :-)) Being somewhat familiar with perl, I looked to CPAN for modules. I think I started with CGI::Builder, but it might have been CGI::Application. In both cases, it was quickly apparent that there just wasn't enough understandable documentation for me to develop something. Next try was Maypole. I got part of my idea working with Maypole, but started running into problems when I had to extend the software for my ideas on user authentication/authorisation/roles. I still believe that in the long run, I will end up running Maypole with this idea. However, for the near term I just backed off a level to get something working with Class::DBI and TT. But, I think you have a few documentation needs. I see attempts at making POD documentation to accompany Maypole and its associated modules on this list quite a bit. I think there is the beginnings of a document (or many) for helping perl oriented people to produce a site using Maypole. I think you do need a document that approaches Maypole from the Java/Struts point of view. The Java community is fairly large, and from what I see of Struts in the book, I think there might be applications where someone started with Struts, but is going to need to move to perl/Maypole to get things working (better). I don't know enough about Ruby/Rails to know if something similar is needed from their point of view. Another orientation for documentation, is security. Security of the CGI or mod-perl application, as well as the (backend) dbase which is wedded to the web application. I hope this is a worthwhile point to bring up. But in any event, I'll go back to lurking for a while. :-) Gord ------------------------------------------------------- This SF.Net email is sponsored by the JBoss Inc.
