I got annoyed with all the ready rolled cookie/sessions stuff - found
all of them (not just the maypole plugins) to be fragile and a pain.
It is much easier to keep the information in the application database
and write 5 to 10 LoC to find/check the user, set $r->{user} and add
the cookie. I have done this several times and it works a lot better
than any of the ready rolled jobs.
I'll post some examples when I have time to fish them out of my laptop.
