If you use the latest MySQL and DBD::mysql, there are server-side
prepared statements.  That will cause problems if mysql_auto_reconnect
is on.

If you use transactions at all, you do need to do some kind of rollback
in a cleanup handler for safety.  You already fixed the issue of caching
connections during startup.
