I use AVFoundation and haven’t had a problem with UVC webcams (I often test 
with a Microsoft Lifecam that is UVC 1.1 compliant).  You still would need to 
utilize DirectShow or AVFoundation to make use and the current plugins are 
well-suited for a lot of situations.
