Hmmm, all of a sudden it started to work ok again. Certainly I have made
some changes to tons of other stuff, I always do, but not to mc, mc is
exactly the same.

So I went digging in my memories and timestamp snooping and diffing
config files and found this in my .bash_profile:

#AIKKS!!! export PROMPT_COMMAND='echo -ne "\033]0;${USER}@${HOSTNAME}: ${PWD}\007"'

I don't really recall why I have it here in the first place...

So in the "times where it didn't work" I had:

export PROMPT_COMMAND='echo -ne "\033]0;${USER}@${HOSTNAME}: ${PWD}\007"'

And it seems it was this Yes, I did some scientific testing,
commenting and uncommenting this line and it proved so. :/

Now the question is why.
