Under FreeBSD 5.3
Problem : MidNightCommander starting very-very slow (5-10 minets or not starting) if my computer lose Internet Connection, or was started without internet connection.
What I can to do ?

Do you have NIS on your machine?
I have a similar problem under Linux Fedora Core -- when /etc/nsswitch.conf file has "files ldap" specifications for "passwd" and "group", not just "files", and computer lose network, the start is too slow.
IMHO, not "ldap" affected only -- any network-related stuff ("files nisplus" should be affected too).
Hint: the problem is inspired by `getgroups()' (or something like that) call...
