Many systems use UTF-8 as their locale character set. At least SuSE and RedHat/Fedora use an utf-8 patch to support such systems. Fedora probably has the most up to date version of this patch. Note that there are 2 versions however, one for mc-4.6.1 PRE, which can be found in the latest (development) (S)RPM for Fedora Core 4 which is based on mc-4.6.1-pre5 (mc-4.6.1a-0.11-FC4.src.rpm). The other version is against HEAD, and can be found in most of the earlier Fedora Core 4 SRPMs as FC4 used HEAD until recently.
