A correction: The old (4.6.1-pre3) version of mc in the Debian stable distribution did contain all necessary files for mc to run. The missing file problem found when converting from the rpm found at:
http://www.ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/utils/file/managers/mc/snapshots/mc-2005112320-1.i386.rpm was because that rpm does not have the /usr/share/mc files in the first place, and not because of a problem with converting it to a .deb package after all. The best solution is as POX <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> suggests, which is to get the 4.6.1 .deb package from the Debian testing distribution. It is apparently Debian policy not to update packages in the stable distribution unless there are security issues or a package fails to work in some major way (which should very rarely happen with stable).
