Hi, I'm assuming barrier-free wifi means some start of gateway page when users connect? Here at the V&A, we have a basic splash screen requiring users to accept terms and conditions. It is the classic disclaimer model - the intention is that in case of dodgy goings on by anyone, the responsibility is in theory placed with the users, as well as setting out what can and can't be done. This is, as far as I am aware, open to debate about whether there is any legal meaning to this, but it does provide some evidence of "reasonable measures to ensure proper use" .
In reality, no-one ever reads these (or at least I would be surprised by any hard evidence that found that to be true). Users press the button to open the door. In this sense it would appear to be just a barrier to entry for our visitors. However, I think it is more useful to see it as a welcoming screen. As a point of entry, it allows you to show visitors what you have to offer them, to make suggestions, buy tickets, etc. Of course any such promotions could be tracked and tweaked too. Having said that, our current wifi splash screen is pretty poor, so currently this is aspirational. We are reviewing wifi. Another approach is of course to just do away with it, which is easier for visitors. I?m looking at the Sony VPL-FHZ55 which has a laser light source and claims 20,000 hours bulb life. Sounds ideal for long-term gallery installations, but I?m having trouble finding any reviews. I also wonder if there are any conservation concerns around the use of these ?blue laser? light sources in the proximity of artworks, even those that aren?t sensitive to sunlight. ?? I think it was a Casio. However, several people on our staff complained about the image. A not insignificant percentage of people said that the projection image had a noticeable blink-image or after-image as they turned their heads. This image was generally one of the primary colors being projected to simulate the image colors. Some people said it caused them discomfort or a headache. I personally didn't see much of a problem but we eventually decided that they weren't the right fit for this particular application. Has anyone else seen these sorts of problems? I don't mean to be spreading FUD, especially since bulb-less projectors would be a big help on the maintenance front. bk ---------------------------------------------------- bryan kennedy director, exhibit media science museum of minnesota bkennedy at smm.org 651.221.2522 ---------------------------------------------------- On Thu, Dec 12, 2013 at 1:36 PM, George Scharoun <GScharoun at mfa.org> wrote: > Has anyone had experience with the latest LED or Laser projectors > available from Casio, Panasonic, Sony? > I?m looking at the Sony VPL-FHZ55 which has a laser light source and > claims 20,000 hours bulb life.
