Same thing here, I fetch news, last article in a newsgroup obviously
is spam. Next time I fetch news, all old articles on server for this
group will be fetched as new, except the last. So I assume it was
canceln, as it isn't present at server anymore.

Yes, so I assume this happens when a group 'looses' the last article
we fetched.

It's both in 1.4.4 and 1.4.15, so it should be known ...
But there is annother problem, which might have been discussed here:
If a group has been sleeping for a long time, and gets one new
article, MD2 won't see this one as new.
So my suggest would be to not only look at the counts, but to ask the
NNTP server which articles are really new since our last contact...
