Yes you can do this with select all, but it would be more time consuming than de-subscribing and re-subscribing. If he makes folders for the messages he wants to keep, he can then have them after de-subscribing, or he could just download the headers (online mode) and mark the ones he wants to delete, and then exit, and the ones he wants would still be there, and he could then select all and download from the menu bar, and get only those (it won't re-download previously downloaded messages). That, though, could be awfully tedious with hundreds of news articles. It can take me 10 minutes to go through c.s.a.misc and do this with only about 150 articles, and it can accumulate that many in a day, so you could be talking thousands. No I think de-subscribing and re-subscribing and getting the last 100 messages is probably the most practical root.
