Hi,

I've finally had a chance to use an MZ-R90. It's tiny and wonderful.

I was wondering about the long(er) seek times people have reported
with the unit. From my observations the unit appears to have two
distinct track change times: approx. 2 seconds if the motor is
running, and approx. 5 seconds if the motor is stopped.

I spent a while listening to the machine run and seek and after
comparing the sounds it makes to my MZ-R50, I found the primary
difference in the 'R90 is the motor start time. If you listen to its
motor start, there is a very slow ramp up in speed. I suppose this was
done to extend the battery life. Seeking itself is also somewhat
slower, but I think this is secondary since if the motor is already
running, the track switch times are within 1 second of the MZ-R50.

If you listen to the MZ-R90 seek it emits a somewhat lazy "slewing"
sound (sounding like a worm drive moves the head). In comparison the
MZ-R50 sounds like a little computer drive, with a prompt and slightly
springy seek sound.

I've also noticed that the mechanical noise of the disc spinning
during running is more pronounced than with my MZ-R50. It's not
alarming, just more noticeable.

Finally, and everyone must say this every year, I can't imagine MD
recorders getting any smaller (okay, maybe a tad thinner, but that's
it!).

Regards,
Rick
