Could you give us a make and model for the unit in question?

Depending upon the unit, you may be able to record in mono, doubling
the playing time.

Sony has some bookshelf systems with MD changers. The DHC-MD515 (see
http://www.minidisc.org/part_Sony_DHC-MD515.html) is available in the
US and has a 3CD and 3MD changer. (Note that this unit has no mono
recording capability).
