The main problem I think is one of conforming to SCMS and/or SDMI. But the fact that you'd be sending raw, uncompressed (i.e. non-ATRAC) audio to the unit puts it within the realm of possibility (Sony has been loath to let ATRAC data travel beyond the bounds of an MD unit). The one issue might be whether the ATRAC chips in portables could really be run at 4X. Are there higher current needs for high speed compression? Perhaps the USB port would only be an option for home decks. In any case, if they can figure out how to make such an arrangement SDMI compliant, it would be a forseeable possiblity!
