However if the 20:1 stereo is encoded as joint-stereo, then 40:1 mono is probably not possible, at least with the same quality as stereo. (But how about a 50:1 (~32kbps) high quality mono voice recording mode like the work Sanyo did in http://www.minidisc.org/transcriber.html? Let's throw all the possibilities in! You could put your *entire* 26 hour collection of Spanish lessons on a single disc!). I've made a call into Sony, hopefully we'll have more details soon.
