The currently established scientific method for doing this is with MOS
("Mean Opinion Score") testing. You present a sample of the original,
then a sample of the unknown and ask [hopefully a large number of]
people to assign a score to the unknown ranging from 1 to 5, which
corresponds to 1 = bad, 2 = poor, 3 = fair, 4 = good and 5 =
excellent. The unknown may be either the processed (e.g. MD) signal or
the unprocessed (e.g. CD) original. Note that testers do not always
give the unprocessed original a 5 (they sometimes think they hear
artifacts).
Doing this testing is expensive.
Wouldn't it be great to have the MOS scores for every ATRAC coder out
there?
Sadyly, the Minidisc manufacturers do not publish this information
(but perhaps they do not always do a thorough MOS type test on every
coder either).
