My impression was that the LP mode addition was basically ready, but maybe they decided to further tweak the ATRAC3 encoder for better sound (have you tried listening to their demo ATRAC3 codings at 66kbps?). Or maybe they had trouble getting the other licensees (Sharp, Matsushita, etc) to sign up for it. It is a totally incompatible extension after all, and could be seen by some to hurt the format's acceptance. I'm still hoping it will show up this fall, but I guess we'll know shortly.
