Sounds like it might be an optical head problem. It's likely a mechanical failure in any case. If you're brave you can try carefully opening it and poking about a bit. I've heard several stories of people's machines magically starting to work after a dissasembly/reassembly cycle. Persumably something gets unjammed or electrically reconnected in the process.
